Thirty-three arrested for DUI


During the week of Dec. 17-23, Hawaii Island police arrested 33 motorists for drunken driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, 10; South Kohala, 6; and Puna, 5.

So far this year, there have been 1,459 DUI arrests compared to 1,416 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 1,413 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,379 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been 38 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared to 21 during the same period last year, an increase of 81 percent.

To date, 28 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: 12 to drugs; four to alcohol; and 12, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
