Two rescued after fall into gulch
The Hawaii County Fire Department reported Monday rescuing a man and a woman who slipped and fell into a gulch on Sunday evening around the 33 milemarker on Highway 19 near Honokaa.
According to a release, Company 8 arrived on scene Sunday night at 8:04 p.m. to find a 27-year-old female about 30 feet down a gulch underneath a bridge, and a 42-year-old male about 60 feet down the gulch. The man sustained life-threatening injuries, the report said.
Both the man and woman were unable to get out of the gulch, and bystanders had called 911.
The pair were extricated from the gulch, and the man was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition. The woman was transported to NHCH in serious condition.
