California man drowns off Kauai

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — A California man has died while swimming off Kauai.

The Garden Island reports that the 41-year-old man appeared to be in distress Thursday afternoon while swimming off Kapa near the Plantation Hale Hotel. Bystanders tried to assist the man and when firefighters arrived they helped bring the body ashore and began CPR. Efforts to revive the man failed and he was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say the man, who has not been identified, is the 11th person to die of drowning in Kauai waters this year.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has posted a high surf warning for all north- and west-facing shores until at least 6 a.m. Saturday. Waves are expected to reach up to 25 feet.
