Haleakala National Park gets new superintendent

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK, Maui (AP) — The National Park Service is naming a wildlife biologist and natural resource manager to be the new superintendent of Haleakala National Park.

The park service said Friday Natalie Gates will transition to her new duties on Maui in March.

Gates has worked at Point Reyes National Seashore in northern California for the last 12 years. She was first a wildlife biologist on Point Reyes and later chief of natural resource management.

Pacific West Regional Director Chris Lehnertz says Gates has a strong track record in the protection of native species and ecosystems.

She says Gates’ deep respect for diverse cultures and communities and her team building skills will be an asset to Haleakala National Park.

The park service says Gates will move to Maui in coming weeks.
