Hawaii owner surrenders illegal pet snake

WAIANAE, Hawaii (AP) — The owner of a boa constrictor has surrendered the pet snake to Hawaii authorities.

Police received an anonymous tip about the boa constrictor, reported to be between 6- and 7-feet long. Police say the Nanakuli resident opted to turn in the snake Thursday under the state’s amnesty program.

Keeping a snake is illegal in Hawaii. The reptiles have no natural, native predators in the islands and pose a serious threat to Hawaii’s environment. Many snake species prey on birds and their eggs, increasing the threat to Hawaii’s endangered native birds.
