Maui Electric Co. to raise rates effective June 1

KAHULUI, Hawaii (AP) — Maui Electric Company customers will see higher bills starting next month.

The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved an interim rate increase of 3.16 percent effective June 1.

The utility says the impact on a typical Maui household will be a monthly increase of $6.60. Molokai customers will see an increase of $5.25 per month, while Lanai customers will pay $5.56 more.

The PUC will continue to review the request and if a lower increase is later approved, the difference will be refunded with interest.
