Whale is found dead on Oahu
HONOLULU (AP) — Federal officials say a whale carcass was found dead washed up along the shoreline on Oahu.
A marine mammal response team with NOAA got a call Sunday morning about a stranded humpback whale, but the animal was already dead by the time volunteers arrived in Waianae.
Dera Look, a NOAA assistant marine mammal response coordinator, says the whale was a calf and had not been dead long. She says a necropsy will be conducted at Hawaii Pacific University to try to answer why the animal died.
The calf was about 15 feet long and weighed up to 2,000 pounds. Look says there was no indication of external trauma, except from rubbing up on the reef.
