Alumni high school

Football games slated

Alumni Football USA will hold the following four games involving Big Island high schools.

—Hilo vs. Waiakea, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at Wong Stadium

—Kealakehe at Konawaena, 7 p.m. Jan. 5

—Honokaa vs. Kohala, TBA

—Keaau vs. Hawaii Prep, TBA

There are 40 spots available for each team at a cost of $100. Alumni Football USA organizes and coordinates the games, and rental of professional helmet, pads and equipment, game day EMTs, officials, announcers, field-liability insurance, DVD and commemorative T-shirts are covered by the entry fee. Some of the money raised will go back to the high schools.

Brantley Center

benefit runs Oct. 20

The Brantley Center will host its inaugural 5-kilometer, half-marathon and 30K Waipio Challenge at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 20.

All three races start in Honokaa, and the registration fee is $25 for the 5K, $65 for the half-marathon and $75 for the 30K, though prices go up Oct. 1. The fee includes race-day entertainment, refreshments, aid stations, finisher medals for the half-marathon and 30K, and finisher T-shirts for all participants. There will be age group awards as well.

The runs are a benefit for the Brantley Center, which has provided “services to the disabled community of North Hilo, Hamakua and Kohala for over 40 years,” according to a release.

Go-kart club will

hold racing today

The Orchid Island Ohana Cart Club will hold racing from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Gates open at 8 a.m., registration starts at 9 a.m., and after a drivers’ meeting at 9:15 a.m., practice runs until 10 a.m.

Aces at Muni

Hilo Municipal Golf Course announced recent hole-in-ones. They include:

— Mark Gushiken, who aced the par 3, 177-yard 10th hole on Sept. 7. He used a 3 wood.

Witnessing Gushiken’s first hole-in-one were John Moses, Larry Morita, Vern Ito, Mel Nakao and Reuben Soriano.

— Holly Weeks, who aced the par 3, 139-yard 2nd hole on Sept. 18. She used a driver.

Witnessing her first hole-in-one were Glenn Sonoda, Nick Balingit and Salvatore Larosa.

— Ed Querubin, who aced the 148-yard eight hole Sept. 16 using 5-iron.

Witnessing Querubin’s second hole-in-one were Harry Youn, Russell Paiva, Paul Moon, Manny Fragiao and Tino Sagon.
