Big Dog 5K Run/Walk is Dec. 30

The Big Dog Resolution 5K Run/Walk will be held at 8 a.m. Dec. 30 starting at the Coconut Island parking lot.

The fee is $5 or a canned good, and all proceeds benefit the Hawaii Island Food Basket.

808 Mx/ATV Association on tap

The 808 Mx/ATV Association will hold its last race of the season Dec. 15 at its facility next to the drag strip.

Gates open at 7 a.m. and the fee is $5 per person, though racers and children under 5 are free.

Holes-in-one at Hilo Municipal

Lloyd Toriano aced the 166-yard 11th hole on Nov. 24 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course. He used a 6 iron while playing with the Hawaii Fil-Am Golf Club.

Witnessing Toriano’s first hole-in-one were Ed Mangibin, Richard Ancheta, Gerald Sodetani, Alex Antonio and Leo Cumlat.

—Wendall Paiva aced the 177-yard 10th hole Thursday at Hilo Muni using a 4-iron.

Dennis Morita, Ken Oliveira, Arlen Bento, Henry Shiroma, Lefty Yogi, Raymond Carvalho, Sherman Kobayashi and Greg Kama all witnessed Paiva’s first hole-in-one.

Setting the record straight

Cortney Arruda will be honored as last season’s MVP when the Hawaii AJA Memorial Baseball League holds it’s season-opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. today at Wong Stadium.

An incorrect MVP was listed in Friday’s edition.

After the ceremomonies, the defending champion Keaukaha Warriors will play the Corsairs.
