43rd Labor Day
The 43rd Annual Big Island Auto Club’s Labor Day Drags were held Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at the Hilo Dragstrip. Results follow:
Quick 8 winner: Kiah Taroma (Hilo) in a Camaro (8.37 sec/162 mph). Runner-up: Lance Wilson (Hilo) in a Pontiac GTO (7.50 sec/191 mph…Wilson broke out of bracket).
Bracket I winner: David Francis (Paauilo) in a Camaro (8.85 sec/145 mph). Runner-up: Donnley Koga (Kurtistown) in a Camaro (9.40 sec/146 mph).
Bracket II winner: Mike Needham (Hilo) in a Mustang (11.65 sec/112 mph). Runner-up: P.J. Marciel (Pukalani, Maui) in a Camaro (red lighted with a time of 10.92 sec/123 mph).
Quick 8 winner: Kiah Taroma (Hilo) in a Camaro (8.30 sec/161 mph). Runner-up: Raycen Wong (Hilo) in a Camaro (broke down on the starting line…no time recorded).
Bracket I winner: Donnley Koga (Kurtistown) in a Camaro (9.54 sec/132 mph). Runner-up: Jeff Hall (Kamuela) in a Nova (9.39 sec/143 mph). Koga won on a hole shot.
Bracket II winner: Richard Souza (Naalehu) in a Chevy Bel Aire (13.78 sec/96 mph). Runner-up: Lew Hodgson (Hilo) in a Chevy Pickup Truck (Red lighted with a time of 17.19 sec/72 mph).
Junior Dragster winner: Kaimi Francis (Hilo) with a time of 9.29 sec/68 mph. Runner-up: Daesha Tobara (Mt. View) with a time of 10.37 sec/58 mph).
Bracket Motorcycle winner: John Malson (Hilo) on a Honda (9.66 sec/136 mph). Runner-up: Teddy Davis (Honolulu) on a Suzuki (8.83 sec/152 mph). Malson wins on a hole shot.
Fastest car on the track: Lance Wilson (Hilo) in a Pontiac GT) (7.50 sec/191 mph).
Next race :Oct. 5-6 at Hilo Drag Strip.

clinic in October
There will be a basketball clinic Oct. 11-13 at the Honokaa Parks and Recreation gym featuring Alika Smith, head coach of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I champion Kalaheo Mustangs.
Youngsters in kindergarten through the six grade will go from 9 a.m.-noon, while instructors will work with students in grades 7-12 from 1-4 p.m.

St. Joseph High School is seeking a girls soccer coach for the 2013-14 season.

Sign-ups set for
The Waiakea Pirates Youth Organization is registering T-Ball players ages 5 (birthdates between May 1, 2008 to April 30, 2009) and 6 (birthdates between May 1, 2007 to April 30, 2008) for the upcoming 2014 season.
Practice will start in December and play will be from Februrary to May. Call Dot at 959-3008 to sign-up.
