Online Extra: Kealakehe falls to Punahou in semis
For much of the season, Kealakehe’s boys soccer team delivered quick knockout blows, stunning opponents by jumping out to big early leads.
Punahou turned the tables on the Waveriders Friday in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I state semifinals, handing them their first loss of the season.
Alec Dinsmore scored two goals, and the Buffanblu advanced to the state championship match with a 4-0 win over Kealakehe at Oahu’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Punahou (9-1-2) will face Oahu Interscholastic Association No. 5 seed Kalani (14-1-1) in today’s 7 p.m. state final.
Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Kealakehe (15-1-1) will take on Maui Interscholastic League champion Kamehameha-Maui (12-3-1) at 3 p.m. today in the tournament’s third-place match.
Kendall Nishina and Blaine Granger staked the Buffanblu to a 2-0 lead, scoring in the 11th and 14th minutes, respectively. Then Dinsmore found the back of the net in the 22nd and 69th minutes.
