Tom Comfort’s 15 kill capped a Penn State comeback Friday night in Honolulu, sending the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team to its second straight five-set loss at the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational.
Aaron Russell smacked a team-high 17 kills in the Nittany Lions’ 24-26, 18-25, 25-17, 25-15, 16-14 victory.
Freshman Sinisa Zarkovic finished with with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .500 for the Warriors (0-4), who failed to capitalize on match point in Game 5 and lost to Penn State for the sixth straight time at the tournament. Brook Sedore gave UH a 14-13 lead with two service aces, but he followed with a service error and then JP Marks’ hitting error gave Comfort a chance to close out the match.
Marks compiled 16 kills for Hawaii, which lost to Ohio State in five on Thursday night.
The other match Friday also went five, with UCLA beating the Buckeyes 17-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-18, 15-13.
Ohio State and Penn State meet today at 4 p.m., followed by the Bruins and UH at 7 p.m.
