Online Extra: Rainbow Wahine move into first with OT victory


Ashleigh Karaitiana hit the go-ahead 3-pointer Saturday night and Shawna-Lei Kuehu scored six of her team-high 17 points in overtime as the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team beat Pacific 74-71 at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, gaining a share of first place in the Big West.

After Karaitiana (11 points) put the Rainbow Wahine ahead by three with 14 seconds remaining, the Tigers’ Erica McKenzie missed a 3-pointer with four ticks left.

Kamilah Martin scored 16 points with a game-high 12 rebounds for UH (13-11, 9-4). Kuehu missed a career-high by a point, shooting 5 for 6 from the floor with eight rebounds.

Gena Johnson tallied a game-high 22 points for Pacific (19-6, 9-4), hitting a pair of free throws with nine seconds left to tie the game 65-65 with nine seconds left in regulation. McKenzie added 15, including a pair of layups on the OT to help answer Kuehu.

Monica DeAngelis added 10 points for Hawaii and a season-high six assists, including a look to Karaitiana that set up the winning basket,
