Online Extra: Rainbow Wahine ousted at WNIT


The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team’s first postseason appearance in 10 years lasted only one game.

Amy Kame scored 19 points Thursday and San Diego coasted past the Rainbow Wahine 61-49 at its Jenny Craig Pavillion in the opening round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

Junior guard Sydney Haydel scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds for UH (17-15) in what marked the the final college appearances for Big Islanders Vicky Tagalicod and Kanisha Bello. Tagalicod, a High High graduate, scored six points off the bench, while Bello (Waiakea) did not score in three minutes of action.

The Toreros (22-9) used a 11-2 run in the first half to build a 10-point lead. Leading 28-21 at halftime, San Diego pulled away by shooting 61 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Shawna-Lei Kuehu scored nine points and Kamilah Martin added eight for Hawaii, which shot just 31.8 percent.

In Laura Beeman’s inaugural season as coach, UH finished a campaign with a winning record for the first time since 2007.
