Women’s soccer

Hufford honored

University of Hawaii at Hilo rookie goalkeeper Jenna Hufford has been selected the Pacific West Conference Women’s Soccer Freshman of the Week.

The conference announced the honor Monday for matches contested Sept. 9-15.

Hufford is from Shingle Springs, Calif.

The Freshman of the Week honor is awarded to a freshman or red-shirt freshman for her overall outstanding play.

Hufford led the Vulcans to a 1-0-1 week by producing a 0.45 goals against average during her 200 minutes in net.

She registered a 0-0 double-overtime draw vs. BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 12 and claimed a 4-1 win vs. Chaminade on Sept. 14. Both games were non-conference.

The Lady Vulcans, under UHH Director of Soccer Lance Thompson, are off to a 3-0-1 start and are ranked seventh in the West Region’s Top 10 poll.

Volleyball

Buyuan honored

Hawaii Pacific University senior defensive specialist Chelsey Buyuan has been selected the Pacific West Conference Women’s Volleyball Defender of the Week.

The conference announced the honor Monday, for matches contested Sept. 9-15.

Buyuan is from Hilo and a former Waiakea High School standout.

The Defender of the Week honor is awarded each week to a libero, middle blocker or overall outstanding defensive player.

Buyuan led the Sea Warriors to a 2-2 week by recording 88 digs over 13 sets. She topped the PacWest in dig average with a 6.77 mark.
