UHH golfer cards 80 at NCAAs
University of Hawaii at Hilo sophomore Dalen Yamauchi carded a 9-under 80 on Tuesday and was at 15-over after two rounds of play at the NCAA Division II golf championships in Hershey, Pa.
Yamauchi, a Waiakea High School graduate, birdied his first hole, No. 10, but quickly fell in trouble two holes later. Over a six-hole stretch, he made three bogeys and two double-bogeys, and Yamauchi was 6-over when he made the turn.
His three birdies on the round were offset by three double bogeys, and he was tied for 80th in the field of 107.
California State Stanislaus’s Rob Damschen carded the low round of the day with a 68 to get to 4-under and was a stroke ahead of South Carolina-Aiken’s Matt Atkins (69).
• Hilo’s Kimberly Kim and Ciera Min each finished in the top five at a U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier Monday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Punahou freshmen Mariel Galdiano earned the spot at the national championships, shooting 72-73 over the 36 holes to finish 1-over.
Kim (75-74) carded a 5-over and was fourth and Min (74-76), a Waiakea High senior, was another shot back in a tie for fifth in the 33-player field.
Japanese pro Yuka Kuriyama (147) beat Punahou freshman Allisen Corpuz in a playoff to grab an alternate spot to the Women’s Open, which starts June 27 in Southhampton, N.Y.
