Notes: The Vulcans — with five freshmen and only one senior on a 13-player roster — are off to a 2-0 start, having swept the University of Alaska-Fairbanks 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 in their opener and the University of Alaska-Anchorage 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 last Saturday at UHH. … Outside hitters Marley Strand-Nicolaisen (20 kills) and Kyndra Trevino-Scott (10) combined for 30 kills in the sweep of Anchorage capping a stellar first to matches for the freshmen. In the earlier win over Fairbanks, the 6-foot Strand-Nicolaisen had a match-high 14 kills and Trevino-Scott added nine in 11 attempt. … Setter Sienna Davis, a 5-10 freshman out of Kamehameha-Maui, orchestrated the UHH offense while her teammates provided additional firepower when the Alaska schools tried to double up on Strand-Nicolaisen and the 5-11 Trevino-Scott. Davis had 29 assists, five digs, two block assist and a service ace in the win over Anchorage and 29 assists against Fairbanks. … The Vulcans also played steady defense and matched up well blocking. Juniors Callie Aberle and Kahealani Vento-Rowe led the dig party. Against Anchorage, Aberle, from Reno, Nev., had 11 digs and Vento-Rowe, out of Hilo High School, had 10. … East Central University of Ada, Okla, under sixth-year coach Dave Thorn, is opening its season in Hilo. The Lady Tigers return five starters and are predicted to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference. … The teams will play a rematch at 3 p.m. Saturday at UHH to close the series, the first meetings between the schools.… Following the series with East Central, the Vulcans will host Fort Hays State University on Sept. 9. The match starts at 7 p.m. … East Central University drew national attention last month when one of its baseball players, Chris Lane of Melbourne, Australia, was gunned down while jogging on Aug. 16. He was a catcher on the Tigers squad. The randon shooting sent shock waves across the United States and Australia, and three young Oklahoma men were charged with the shooting.
