Vallejo beats Stars again
Tyler Bruggerman fired a five-hit shutout and designated hitter Justin James hit two home runs to lead the Vallejo Admirals to a 9-0 win over the visiting Hawaii Stars on Saturday.
The teams close out the six-game series today in Vallejo, Calif, with a single nine-inning Pacific Association baseball game at 10:15 a.m. HST. The Stars (14-21) then return to Hilo and will host the league-leading San Rafael Pacifics (24-8) in a four-game series, starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, at Wong Stadium.
Bruggerman (1-0) scattered five hits, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in blanking the Stars on Saturday. Hawaii starter Cortney Arruda (2-4) hurled five innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs, but only two were earned as the Stars committed three errors in taking the loss.
James went 3 for 5 with his two home runs as he raised his batting average to .327. Teammates Nathan Tomaszewski (2 RBIs) and Hector Garcia each added two hits with a home run. James and Tomaszewski clubbed back-to-back homers in the seventh inning.
Issac Wenrich also had two hits for the Admirals (11-19), who have taken three of five in the series so far.
Tyler Krobetzky and Marshall McDonald each had a double for Hawaii.
Michael Kenui replaced Arruda in the sixth and pitched two innings. He gave up three hits and two runs, with a strikeout. Reece Alnas pitched the final inning and allowed two hits and no runs.
