Sophomore Kristine Pasek scored three goals, sophomore Brianne Lopiccolo had two and sophomore Analysa Rodriguez added a goal as the University of Hawaii at Hilo defeated Chaminade University 6-2 on Monday afternoon.
The Pacific West Conference women’s soccer match was played at the St. Louis High School field in Honolulu.
The Vulcans, under first-year head coach Unity Beddingfield, improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in PacWest action. The host Silverswords dropped to 0-4 and 0-2, respectively.
“The girls played hard all the way through,” Beddingfield said. “It was really windy, probably between 5 to 10 miles per hour, and we had to make adjustments all day. We had a couple of injuries and changed around our rotation. Teal (Basquez) sparked us with her energy and I thought we played well at times.”
Basquez is a 5-foot-5 junior defender from Chino Hills, Calif.
Pasek, a 5-5 forward from Apple Valley, Calif., also had two assists while Lopiccolo had three assists and junior Lianne Yamane added one in a well-balanced attack.
Senior goalie Helen Schrock played all 90 minutes in the net. She allowed two goals and recorded five saves.
“Helen did a good job in goal,” Beddingfield said.
Alyssa Nagai and Twyla Hamasaki each scored a goal for Chaminade.
It was the second time in a little over a week that the teams played. On Sept. 8, UHH beat the Silverswords 5-1 in a preseason match on Oahu.
The Vulcans next host Fresno Pacific University on Saturday and Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday at UHH. Both matches start at 3 p.m.

Sophomore Dayton Sato scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 115th minute to lift Chaminade to a 3-2 overtime win over UH-Hilo on Monday morning at the St. Louis High School field in Honolulu.
The Silversword improved to 2-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the PacWest men’s soccer standings. The Vulcans, under first-year head coach Ziggy Korytoski, dropped to 0-4 and 0-3, respectively.
Rayden Baia scored in the 33rd minute to give UHH a 1-0 lead before Sato tied it at 1-1 with his first goal at 33:50. The score was tied 1-1 at the half, with the Vulcans outshooting the hosts on goal 7-4.
Xavier Fuerte gave UHH a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 71st minute. But the Silverswords tied it at 2-2 on Sam Galloway;s goal later in the half.
The teams played through a scoreless first overtime before Sato scored his second goal at 114:15 to give the hosts the win.
Chaminade goalies Conor Knox gave up two goals to go along with seven saves. UHH goalie Luis Romero went the distance, allowing three goals with five saves.
Philip Sakaba and Landon Salvador each had an assist for the Vulcans.
UHH held an 11-8 advantage on shots on goal.
The Vulcans next host Fresno Pacific University on Saturday and Notre Dame de Namur on Tuesday at UHH. Both matches start at 12:30 p.m.
