University of Hawaii at Hilo junior Kirsten Shimizu has been selected the Pacific West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office on Monday for games contested Jan. 2-8.

Shimizu, a 5-foot point guard from Sacramento, Calif., led the Vulcans to a 2-0 week with a pair of road victories on Oahu against BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific.

She led the PacWest in scoring for the week by averaging 22.5 points per game, and ranked third in field goal percentage after shooting 76 percent from the floor (17 for 25).

Shimizu was red hot from beyond the arc, hitting 75 percent (6 for 8) of her attempts while also making 83.3 percent (5 for 6) of her free throws.

She ranked second in 3-point shooting, tied for second in 3-pointers made per game (3.0), and tied for 10th in free throw shooting.

Shimizu also averaged 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals per contest, tying for fourth in thefts per game for the week, according to the PacWest statistics.

Shimizu is the second Vulcan to be honored by the conference. Senior power forward Hillary Hurley was named the PacWest player of the week earlier this season.
