Wet floor wipes out UHH basketball
The University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s and women’s Pacific West Conference basketball games against Azusa Pacific on Saturday were canceled due to safety concerns.
At the start of the women’s game, there was moisture on the gym’s floor and three different Azusa Pacific players slipped while on defense. Sophomore forward Maddy Barrett had to be helped off the court. She is one of four underclassmen starters.
The Cougars (14-9, 11-4 PacWest) are ineligible for the inaugural six-team conference tournament. It’s their first year in conference, along with California Baptist and Point Loma, two other teams ahead of UHH in the standings.
The Vulcans (11-10, 8-7) are on a three-game losing streak. However, they have already clinched a spot to the tourney, and host last-place Chaminade (1-20, 1-15) at 5 p.m. Tuesday on Senior Night. Their last game of the regular season is at BYU-Hawaii on Saturday.
The UHH men are 6-17 and 4-11 in the conference heading into its 7:30 p.m. game Tuesday against the Silverswords (16-8, 13-3).
