Fugitive from Texas arrested on Big Island

U.S. marshals have arrested a Texas man at a rental home in Keaau.

At approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday, Samuel Lawrence Adkins, 19, was located and apprehended by the Hawaii Fugitive Task Force at house on 8th Avenue.

On Aug. 1, 2012, the State of Texas issued an arrest warrant for Adkins charging him with one count of aggravated sexual assault, a first-degree felony.

The alleged incident took place in the early morning hours of July 30, 2012, in Austin, where Adkins used the threat of deadly force to facilitate the assault.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force received information that Adkins fled Texas and was in Hawaii. The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force picked up the investigation and tracked Adkins to a residence in Keaau.

As task force officers approached the residence, Adkins fled out the back door and a short foot chase entailed.

Adkins is currently being housed at the Hawaii County Correction Center where he awaits an extradition hearing back to Austin, Texas. Adkins is being held on a $500,000 bond.

The Hawaii Fugitive Task Force is a statewide multi-agency fugitive initiative comprised of Hawaii State Sheriffs, Hawaii County Police Department, Maui County Police Department, Kauai County Police Department, Honolulu Police Department, and Hawaii High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area.
