UHH baseball extends collegiate record losing streak
The UH-Hilo baseball team lost another doubleheader to Cal State Baptist 11-0 and 5-3 on Friday in Riverside, Calif., extending its losing streak to 10 straight games.
With the twinbill loss to the Lancers, the Vuls have now lost 19 of their last 20 games.
UHH (6-25) extended its collegiate record losing streak to 23 straight years that covers the NCAA Division I and II and NAIA levels.
It is UHH coach Kallen Miyataki’s second season. The Vuls finished 14-33 last year after he replaced Joey Estrella.
In the 11-0 Game 1 loss, Byron Freitas had two of UHH’s six hits.
The Lancers had 19 hits, and tagged losing pitcher Eric Vega (1-5) for six runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.
In the 5-3 Game 2 loss, Freitas and Phillip Steering had two hits each. Freitas also had two RBIs, and raised his batting average to .327.
Jordan Ah Chong (0-3) was the losing pitcher. He allowed five runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings in the seven-inning game.
Roy Fujimoto annual scholarship deadline
Applications are being accepted for the 13th annual Roy Fujimoto Senior Scholarships.
The scholarships, sponsored by KTA Super Stores and the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, will go to four graduating seniors in recognition of their BIIF athletic accomplishments, academic record and community service. An independent committee will select each of the recipients, who will receive $1,500 college scholarships. Recipients can use the funds to offset the cost of tuition, books, and room and board expenses.
Eligibility
The selection committee will consider current high school seniors who will attend a college/university in the fall. The student/athletes must attend a BIIF high school and participate in BIIF sports.
Qualities considered
• Athletic achievement, which shall include contributions to the team; versatility in BIIF sports; sportsmanship and dedication; and character and behavior, on and off the field.
• Academic record, which shall include grade point average throughout high school, high school course load and SAT/ACT scores.
• Community service, which shall include school activities outside of athletics and involvement in the Big Island community.
Nominations
The selection committee will only accept official BIIF senior scholarship nomination forms.
Students must submit the following items:
• A typed nomination form signed by the student’s school principal and athletic director
• An official transcript and SAT/ACT scores
• A personal statement no longer than 200 words.
• Letters of reference (two maximum)
• A photograph (preferably a head-and-shoulder senior portrait)
The selection committee will not accept stapled or incomplete applications.
Students may include supporting material on six one-sided sheets (81/2 inches by 11 inches) of paper. Enclose all materials, including nomination forms, personal statements, letters of reference and photographs in one package.
Students must submit complete applications (find mailing address on nomination form) by 5 p.m. April 29.
The selection committee will not accept materials submitted via facsimile transmission or applications received after April 29.
Applications are available in each BIIF school’s athletic director’s office.
Application deadline is Monday, April 27.
Kamehameha Canoe race on April 12 at Hilo Bay
The 32nd Annual Business Canoe Race is scheduled for Sunday, April 12 at Hilo Bay.
This fun event is a fundraiser for the Kamehameha Canoe Club and is co-sponsored by KWXX-B97 radio stations.

There are several divisions teams may enter:
Business Women, Men and Mixed (for paddlers with no experience)
Intermediate Women, Men and Mixed (may include two persons who have not paddled w/in five years, also for
persons who are presently practicing with canoe clubs)
Open Women, Men and Mixed (may include six experienced paddlers)
Open Mixed Teens (for those 18 and under)
Open Senior Mixed Masters (for those 50 plus)
All Mixed divisions must include three female paddlers. Steerspersons will be provided for the Business and Intermediate Divisions.
