HPU sweeps Vulcans

After losing three out of their first four games with the University of Hawaii at Hilo, visiting Hawaii Pacific University swept a doubleheader from the Vulcans, 15-2 and 6-0, on Sunday.

The nonconference, season-ending twinbill was played at Wong Stadium.

The Sea Warriors finished their regular season with a 29-23 record. The Vulcans, under interim head coach Kallen Miyataki, ended their season with a 14-33 mark.

The teams opened their six-game series Friday night with HPU winning the opener 10-1 and UHH the nightcap 7-4. On Saturday, the Vulcans swept, winning 4-3 and 4-1.

In Sunday’s opener, Chad Bolibol had four hits and drove in three runs and Samuel Goold and Lanan Rice-Kashima each added three hits to lead HPU to the 15-2 win over the UHH.

The Sea Warriors banged out 20 hits in the opener. They broke it open in the fifth inning with a seven-run explosion and closed the ninth inning with a six-run outburst on their way to the big win.

Bolibol led the way, going 4 for 6 with three RBIs and he scored twice. Goold was 3 for 6 while teammates Jordan Oshiro, Kevin Lenik, Codey Ellenwood and Ryan Torres-Torioka each added two hits.

No one paired hits for the Vulcans, who were shut down by HPU starting pitcher John Albert (7 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs) and reliever Bryson Gauthe (2 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs). Albert (2-1) earned the win. UHH reliever Jeremy Dela Cruz (3-8) went 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.

In Game 2, Ellenwood and Keanu Kapani led HPU with two hits apiece and Tyler Tokunaga drove in two runs. No one paired hits for the Vulcans as Miyataki substituted freely in the game and played all available players.

Nolan Hopple (1-0) started for the Sea Warriors and got the win. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out one and walking one.

Reliever Seamus Yoneshige (0-7), one of six Vulcans to take the mound, was tagged with the loss. He allowed three hits and two runs in his 1 2/3 innings.
