The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has confirmed the lava flow heading toward the Pahoa area remains active after spotting steam rising from a ground crack in the Wao Kele o Puna Forest Reserve.
HVO geologists said earlier today the flow may have stalled after a flyover Wednesday found no visible activity at its outer edges.
Janet Babb, HVO geologist, said another overflight today confirmed that is not the case.
“The inference is it is continuing to move into a crack,” she said.
The flow is within 2 miles of the Kaohe Homesteads, and has been watched closely since it was labeled as a “potential concern” by geologists Friday.
Hawaii County Civil Defense will host another meeting on the flow at 6:30 p.m. today at the Pahoa Community Center.
