Edwin “Gus” Garcia Villanueva, 75 of Pahala died Jan. 1 in Honolulu. Born in Olaa, he was a retired supervisor for the former Ka’u Sugar Plantation and a member of the Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Friends may call 3-9 p.m. Wednesday at Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church; service 6 p.m. Friends may call again 8-10 a.m. Thursday at the same church; Mass at 10 a.m., with burial to follow. Casual attire and no flowers. Survived by his wife, Marion Ortiz Kittelson-Villanueva of Pahala; daughters, Jacquelyn “Jackie” (Vince) Sinclair of Blodgett, Ore., Angela “Angie” (Carl) Packer of Keaau and Peggy (Joel) Kalalau of Hawaiian Paradise Park; son, Elgon J. Fusako “Bernie” Matsumura, 95, of Hilo is survived by, among others, her sister-in-law, Tsuyuko Hasegawa of Waipahu, Oahu; and five great-grandchildren. Additional information appeared in Thursday’s edition.


Claudine Duke, 85, of Hawaiian Beaches died Jan. 1 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired truck driver, a U.S. Army veteran from World War II, and a member of the VFW Post 3830 and PRUMA (Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid) Association. Martin Esteban Jr., 77, of Hilo died Jan. 3 at home. Born in Wailuku, Maui, he was a retired meat department supervisor for KTA Super Stores, a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Halai Kumiai and the Hawaii County Senior Citizen Softball League, and a 2000 inductee into the Hilo Sportsman Hall of Fame. Robert Shigeru Kami, 91, of Volcano died Dec. 30 at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
