Hawaii Prep had beaten its past two opponents by a combined score of 22-0, and Ka Makani coach Steve Perry thought his girls soccer team needed to be challenged.
Waiakea obliged Saturday in Waimea, and Perry liked how HPA responded.
Senior Katie Case converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute, and junior Emily Evans scored 10 minutes later as the Ka Makani remained unbeaten with a 2-0 win over the Warriors in a Big Island Interscholastic Federation match.
“It was a well-played (match) against a quality opponent,” Perry said. “We needed to be challenged. We knew today we’d be pushed.”
Perry credited forwards Nanea Tavares and Bri Vallente for applying offensive pressure in front of the Waiakea (4-2-2) goal from the start.
In the first half, Tavares delivered a cross to Lauren Pries, who hit a shot that went just over the crossbar. Tavares then followed suit, just missing the goal after taking a cross from Evans.
“The girls were still upbeat even though it was 0-0 at the halftime,” Perry said.
Case put HPA (7-0) on the board with her seventh goal of the season, and Evans scored off a throw-in, drilling a 35-yard blast just under the crossbar and into the upper left corner of the net.
“I was happy for Katie and Emily,” Perry said. “They get overshadowed. They work the hardest out of anybody out there. It’s nice for them to get the reward.”
Defensively, senior Hannah Unger recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
“Hannah Unger played good in goal,” Perry said. “She was coming off her line quickly and playing some balls.”
HPA will next play Kealakehe (8-0) on the road at 6 p.m. Wednesday in a battle of undefeated teams.
“Wednesday will be another challenge,” Perry said. “I know the girls are really excited about that.”
Kealakehe 9, Keaau 0: Senior McKenna Davidson and junior Kari Van Mols each had a hat trick at Waverider Stadium, giving both players 13 goals for the season.
Seniors Kyonna McDonald and Brittany Denzer, and freshmen Lexie Cuaresma also scored for the Waveriders (8-0).
Sophomore Sulley Schuster and freshman Logan Harris combined to blank the Cougars (4-5) in goal.
Konawaena 3, Kamehameha 1: After the Warriors took a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Wildcats turned three long-range shots into second-half goals.
Junior Saxon Nagata tied it at 1 on an 18-yard shot that richoceted off the left post and into the net for her seventh goal of the season.
Senior Roxana Valdovinos then gave Konawaena (6-2-1) the lead, scoring her second goal by rifling a 25-yard shot from a tough angle on the left flank.
Senior Ashley Teshima capped the scoring, ripping a shot from 18 yards out into the top right corner of the net.
Senior Sharayah Ah Chong converted on a penalty kick in the first half for the Warriors (6-2-1).
St. Joseph 1, Parker 1: Freshman Aolani Pieper scored her second goal of the season in the second half in Waimea, tying the match for the Bulls (1-7-1).
Parker, the host team, could not identify the goal scorer for St. Joseph (0-7-1) in the first half.
Hilo 8, Kohala 0: Sophomore Carmen Shumway-Garson scored twice, junior Rose Nakamura scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season, and sophomore Lolly Higa also found the net twice in Kapaau for the Vikings.
Freshman Savannah Toussaint and senior Brianna Kawai-Nathaniel added goals for Hilo, which improved to 5-2-2.
Alohi Chambless and Bailey Honda shared in the shutout.
The Cowgirls fell to 1-8.
Boys
Kealakehe 9, Keaau 0: Junior Kapono Berard and senior Jordan Rapoza each scored twice, and senior Cory Fisher tallied his sixth goal and three assists for the undefeated Waveriders.
Sophomore Keoni Yates collected his team-high eighth goal and two assists, while senior Tyler Yates added a goal and an assist for Kealakehe (6-0) in a match that ended in the 58th minute because of the league’s nine-goal mercy rule.
Junior Connor Keale and freshman Tyler DeVerse also found the net, and senior Kawela Benson and sophomore Cappy Alterman each had one assist.
Benson and senior Aaron Ventimiglia combined to shut out the Cougars (2-5) in goal.
Waiakea 3, Hawaii Prep 2: After the Ka Makani took a 1-0 halftime lead, Warriors senior Nuu Aiava scored three unanswered goals for the Warriors in the 51st, 62nd and 74th minutes.
Aiava attended a national rugby event in December and missed Waiakea’s first four matches, but he has scored eight goals in just three contests since returning to the Warriors (4-3).
Junior forward Kepa Police scored both goals for HPA (3-2), giving him six for the season.
Honokaa 4, Christian Liberty 0: Senior Chayce Moniz gave host Honokaa a 2-0 halftime lead with his fifth and sixth goals of the season, and senior Dylan Shiraki added a goal and an assist for the Dragons (5-0).
Moniz scored off a throw-in by Shiraki in the seventh minute before knocking in a cross from Robert Connors in the 25th.
Shiraki, who leads the team with seven goals, has scored in each of the Dragons’ five matches.
Kekoa Phenicie added his second goal in the final minute, while senior Maikai Coelho blanked the Canefire (2-1-2) in goal.
Dragons coach Maurice Miranda said the back line of Alden Aguirre, Tony Connors and Josh Tobias anchored a defense that didn’t allow a shot on goal in the second half.
Makua Lani 8, Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science 0: Junior Elijah Lingenfelder collected his 15th and 16th goals of the season, and senior Andrew Dong also scored twice at Old Kona Airport Park for the Lions, who improved to 6-1-1.
Junior Keawe Alapai added his eighth goal of the season, while sophomore Genesis Marks and freshman Aidan Alcos also scored for Makua Lani, which benefited from an own goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Murphy recorded the shutout of HAAS (0-4-1).
Konawaena 1, Kamehameha 0: Sophomore J.G. Replogle scored his eighth goal of the season early in the second half at Julian Yates Field as the Wildcats improved to 3-4-2.
Junior Gabriel Magana blanked the Warriors (4-5-1) in goal.
Hilo 8, Kohala 0: Senior Johnathan Perez tallied his 12th goal of the season, and Rayce Takayesu scored his first two goals in Kapaau as the Vikings improved to 7-0.
Dane Miyata added his seventh goal, while Hunter Grosskreutz, Mikah Hatcher, Max Darris and Adrian Vidad all scored once for Hilo.
The Cowboys dropped to 1-7.
