Donald C. Winter, a distinguished member of the National Academy of Engineering, will speak on “Deepwater Horizon — a case study in managing risk” from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in UCB-100, next to the Kawili Street entrance and parking lot at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
His visit is sponsored by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, whose members invite the public to attend.
Winter is a professor of engineering practice in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is a former secretary of the Navy.
As chairman of the academy’s committee investigating the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Winter will share the official findings of the investigation — just released in December — and will address the challenges of anticipating and managing the inherent risks, uncertainties and dangers associated with deep-water oil drilling that led to America’s worst marine environmental disaster.
