If you smoke and want to quit, the Hilo office of the American Lung Association in Hawaii (ALAH) invites you to stop by between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, and pick up a “Project Breathe” survival kit.

Staffers and volunteers have fixed up 100 of the free kits with quit-smoking resources and incentives. The kits will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Family and friends also may pick up a survival kit for a loved one.

Each kit contains pamphlets on the “Quit Smoking Action Plan,” “How You Can Stop Smoking For Good!” and “Stop Smoking, Control Your Weight.” There also is information about the ALAH Freedom From Smoking programs, the Hawaii Tobacco Quit Line and Lung HelpLine, a stress reliever, stickers and other things that will help smokers hold fast to their new year’s resolution to quit.

“The purpose of this event is to encourage smokers to set a quit date in the next 30 days and to highlight the importance to ‘breathe,'” explained Clarissa Fernandes, the Hawaii Island program coordinator.

There will be a prize drawing for participants who complete the baseline survey forms for grant purposes.

This project was made possible thanks to the Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation.

The motto of ALAH is “When You Can’t Breathe, Nothing Else Matters.”

“The American Lung Association in Hawaii is a nonprofit, voluntary public health organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease in Hawaii. Our programs focus on the areas of asthma, clean air, tobacco prevention and lung disease,” said Fernandes.
