Soldiers heading to Afghanistan
HONOLULU (AP) — About 2,600 Hawaii soldiers with the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade are heading for Afghanistan.
Members of the brigade began leaving for the yearlong deployment last week.
The Schofield Barracks unit has already shipped about 90 Black Hawk, Chinook and Kiowa Warrior helicopters.
Officials say the brigade will be based at Kandahar, Tarin Kowt in Uruzgan province and Forward Operating Base Wolverine in Zabul province in southern Afghanistan.
About 3,500 Schofield infantry soldiers with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team are already serving there.
Neither Hawaii brigade will benefit from the Army’s decision to shorten combat deployments from 12 months to nine months.
Caldwell joins mayor’s race
HONOLULU (AP) — Former Honolulu acting mayor Kirk Caldwell has launched a campaign to run for mayor.
Caldwell says he believes Honolulu deserves better than it’s getting now and he can do the job.
Caldwell served as acting mayor in 2010 after then Mayor Mufi Hannemann resigned to run for governor. He lost to Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle in a special election for the remainder of Hannemann’s term in September 2010. Caldwell had served city managing director under Hannemann.
Caldwell told reporters Thursday he’s confident he can win.
Cha Thompson, the campaign manager for Carlisle’s re-election campaign, says the mayor anticipated a challenge from Caldwell. She says Carlisle has brought the city’s fiscal house in order and will continue to stress fiscal discipline.
Solar firm warned it might be delisted
HONOLULU (AP) — The Nasdaq Stock Market has warned Hoku Corp. the company faces delisting because its stock continues to trade below $1 a share.
The Honolulu-based commercial solar power company says Nasdaq sent it a notice saying the company has until July 10 to maintain a minimum bid closing price of at least $1 for 10 straight business days.
The company said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it will consider all available options to resolve the deficiency and regain compliance with the minimum price requirement.
Hoku shares closed up 3 cents, or 3.6 percent, at 73 cents a share.
A Hoku subsidiary, Hoku Materials, has recently been in a dispute with Idaho Power Co. about unpaid electricity bills for a Pocatello manufacturing plant.
Maui couple sues police over search
KIHEI, Maui (AP) — A Kihei couple is suing the Maui Police Department alleging officers raided their home while executing a search warrant on the wrong address.
April and Norman Freeland filed the lawsuit in federal court in Honolulu in October.
The lawsuit alleges that on April 15 officers forced the Freelands to wait outside while they searched the residence for nearly half an hour, even after they knew they were at the wrong address.
The complaint claims police violated the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights and seeks $250,000 in damages and $1 million in punitive damages.
