Kenneth Hon of the University of Hawaii at Hilo Geology Department will present a free public talk on Kalapana lava flows as part of Hawaii Island’s 3rd Annual Volcano Awareness Month. He will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday in UHH-UCB 100.
Eruptions on Kilauea’s east rift zone have sent lava flows into Kalapana four times over the past 35 years, with vastly different impacts each time.
Hon, a professor of geology/volcanology and former USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist, will discuss the eruptions, including how they affected the community and helped volcano scientists gain a better understanding of the dynamics of flowing lava.
