DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
During the week of Jan. 9-15, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 13; South Hilo, 5; Puna, 4; South Kohala, 3; and Ka’u, 2.
So far this year, there have been 58 DUI arrests compared with 52 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.5 percent.
There have been 49 major accidents so far this year compared with 58 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.5 percent.
So far this year, there have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with three official traffic deaths during the same period last year, a decrease of 100 percent.
