The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is hosting a rare open house today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate 100 years of continuous volcano monitoring. The event will feature displays about Hawaii volcanoes, demonstrations on how scientists monitor the eruptions, hands-on activities for all ages and more. It’s part of a larger effort to commemorate the third annual Volcano Awareness Month. A schedule of related events may be found at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov. HVO is located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park near the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum on the Kilauea Caldera. For today’s event, park entry fees are being waived.
