Albatross chick hatches on atoll
HONOLULU (AP) — A bird conservation group says an endangered short-tailed albatross chick has hatched in the far northwestern edge of the Hawaiian islands for the second year in a row.
The American Bird Conservancy said Monday the same short-tailed albatross male and female who nested last year at Midway Atoll returned this year.
Until last year, short-tailed albatross had recently only reproduced at two sites: Torishima in Japan and disputed islands controlled by Tokyo and claimed by Beijing, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.
The bird was once the most abundant North Pacific albatross species, with a population of more than a million. Feather hunting decimated the species at the turn of the 20th century.
Fatal stabbing by Oahu beach
HONOLULU (AP) — A man is dead and another in police custody after a stabbing near a Waikiki beach — apparently over a stolen bag.
Police say a 20-year-old man was stabbed early Sunday near Queen’s Beach after he and another man tried to steal a bag from a 39-year-old man.
The owner of the bag allegedly stabbed the two men. One of the men was treated for stab wounds, while the 20-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, second-degree assault and resisting arrest.
Pregnant cow’s death is probed
PAIA, Maui (AP) — Maui police are investigating the death of a prize-winning pregnant cow.
The cow was found with its legs cut off in a pasture near Hookipa Beach Park last week and its owner wants answers.
Owner Gerard Cambra said the red and white cow was found Thursday morning.
He says the cow was likely killed sometime between Wednesday evening and sunrise Thursday.
Cambra, whose family leases the pasture, suspects that because the cow’s legs were deboned, the animal was slaughtered for meat.
The cow was six months pregnant and won a first-place ribbon last fall at the Maui Fair. She was born in 2006.
Another one of Cambra’s cows was killed about a year-and-a-half ago in a different pasture. He raises cattle as a hobby.
