Paul Yoshitoku Takehiro, 82, of Hilo died Jan. 9 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pahala, he retired from the Hawaii Masons and Plasterers and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Keaukaha Ward. Kanacio Amay, 91, of Honokaa died Jan. 11 at Hale Ho’ola Hamakua. Born in Kukuihaele, she was a retired state maintenance worker, a member of The Honokaa Senior Citizen, United Puerto Rican Association in Kohala and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honokaa. Dionicio “Dio” Balaoro Baruela, 67, of Pahala died Friday, Dec. 2, at Ka’u Hospital in Pahala. Born in Ga-Ang, San Juan, Abra, Philippines, he worked as landscaper and was also a member for the Iglesia Ni Critsto Church in Naalehu. Friends may call Saturday at the family residence in Pahala for an all-night vigil beginning at 5 p.m. Casual attire. Final service and committal to follow in San Juan, Abra, Philippines. Hannah Mariah (Kawelu) Kaupiko, 95, of Hilo died Wednesday, Jan. 18, at home. Born in Waiohino, Ka’u, she was a retired sales clerk for the former S.H. Kress Store; a Kupuna at Waiakea Elementary School and ‘Aha Punana Leo School; a University of Hawaii at Hilo Master Gardener; and a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of Hale O Na Ali’i; a member and Deaconess of Haili Congregational Church and a member of the Haili Church Choir. Visitation will be held from 5-9 p.m. on Friday at Haili Congregational Church, Hilo; Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation from 8-9 a.m. Saturday at the church; Funeral service at 9 a.m.; Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park, Lehua Section. Chieko M. Nakashima, 88, of Hilo died Jan. 4 at the Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was a retired licensed practical nurse at the former Hilo Hospital, member of Hilo Hooganji Mission, Waiakea Uka Kumiai, Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin and Hilo Daijingu. Margaret N. Ogawa, 90, of Hilo died at home on Saturday, Jan. 21. Born in Captain Cook, she was a retired clerk-stenographer with the State of Hawaii Third Circuit Court. She was also a member of Puna Hongwanji Mission, Buddhist Woman’s Association, University Heights FCE Club, and the HGEA Retirees Unit.
