Griffon Jones scored 16 points to lead Dixie State to an 88-73 victory over the struggling University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s basketball team on Tuesday night.
The Red Storm jumped out to an 18-point lead in a Pacific West Conference game played in St. George, Utah.
UHH’s Kiel Myers posted a 19-point, 10-rebound performance in a losing effort as the Vulcans shot just 38.5 percent in losing their fourth straight.
“The effort and will to win were there,” UHH coach Jeff Law said. “But the shooting wasn’t. We will get back to work, and when we get these guys at our place, hopefully we’ll take better shots.”
Myers, a 6-6 junior forward, hit 7 of 13 shots from the field including a 2-of-4 effort from 3-point range.
The Red Storm men improved to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in the PacWest standings. The Vulcans slipped to 7-9 and 1-7, respectively.
Also for UHH, Zachary Wilde added 14 points while Dirk Snel had 13 and Andrew Papenfus had 11.
Dixie State led 44-26 at the intermission.

Hillary Hurley scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Vulcans (7-9, 4-4).
“Dixie State did a good job tonight, they executed better than we did and deserved to win,” Vulcans coach David Kaneshiro said. “We’ll get back and get to work, and then we’ll see them in a week at our place.”
Dixie State led 23-21 at the intermission.
