Cappy is the featured pet at Tasha Ohana Animal Sanctuary, home for more than 70 dogs, 200 cats and six trained pigs. On the outskirts of Hilo, it has been in operation since 2002, co-founded by Laurie Lannan and her mother, Amy Lannan. The nonprofit shelter operates on donations from the community and its founders.
“The animals come when no other options are available except euthanasia. Big Isle residents bring animals to the shelter because they know Tasha Ohana will provide a safe and healthy environment for the animals to live their lives,” said volunteer Rosemary Karlsson. “When possible, adoption homes are found; if not, no animal is put down unless it is sick or has poor quality of life.”
