Bill aims to help missing children
HONOLULU (AP) — Parents and guardians who fail to report missing children could face felony charges under a bill before the Hawaii Senate.
Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz has introduced a bill he calls ‘Caylee’s Law,’ which refers to a widely-publicized missing child case in Florida.
The bill is named for Caylee Anthony, whose mother Casey didn’t report Caylee’s disappearance for about a month.
Dela Cruz says his bill places greater responsibility on parents and guardians by holding them accountable for reporting missing children in a timely manner.
The bill would make it a felony if a parent or guardian fails to report the disappearance of a child under 12 within 48 hours.
$40K grant for healthier schools
HONOLULU (AP) — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii will be giving the state Department of Education a grant to help schools applying for certification under a national program to make campuses healthier.
Kaiser will present a $40,000 check to Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi today.
Education officials say the money will help schools applying for HealthierUS School Challenge certification. It’s a voluntary initiative by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food and nutrition services.
As of October, there were more than 2,000 certified schools nationwide, but none in Hawaii.
The certification recognizes schools for making significant changes to aspects of school health including food, nutrition education and physical activity.
FAA investigates hard landing
HONOLULU (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a flight student’s hard landing of a Cessna at Honolulu International Airport.
FAA spokeswoman Lynn Lunsford says the pilot was on a training flight and lost control while trying to land Thursday. The Cessna 172 veered off the left side of a runway, went into a grassy area and come to a stop on another runway with the landing gear collapsed.
The state Department of Transportation says the 20-year-old female flight student was the only person on board. She was not injured but the plane has substantial damage.
Airport firefighters helped her out of the plane, which was removed during a brief closure of the runway.
Transportation spokesman Dan Meisenzahl says there were no disruptions of any aircraft landings or departures.
