Senior Maurice Cole and junior McKay Massey each scored 17 points to lead Dixie State University to an 83-76 win over the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Monday night.
The Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game was played at UHH Gym.
In the earlier women’s game, the Red Storm from St. George, Utah fought past the Vulcans 59-51.
Junior Landon Clegg and senior Griffon Jones each added 11 points for the Dixie State men (13-4 overall, 8-1 PacWest).
Senior Zach Wilde had a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Vulcans (7-11, 1-9). Junior Mychael Hearn had 14 points and junior Terrell Mack 10.
The Red Storm led 42-37 at halftime of the men’s contest, then outscored the Vulcans 41-39 in the second half.
“Credit Dixie State — they hit some big shots at big times,” UHH coach Jeff Law said. “I’m proud of the way our guys played, they fought hard and competed tonight against the best team in the league.
“We had some missed free throws and some turnovers that hurt us. But we need to hit those free throws at key times. We just need to learn to win and I think once we do, we’ll take off from there.”
The UHH teams host Grand Canyon University in PacWest games on Saturday.

Freshman Kirsten Marie Liana, a former Farrington High on Oahu standout, scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Red Storm (12-5 overall, 7-2 PacWest) to a tough win over the Vulcans (8-10, 5-5).
Junior center Becca Thomas followed Liana with 14 points and added five rebounds as Dixie State won the rebounding battle, 44-42.
Junior point guard Kirsten Shimizu led UHH with 14 points and junior guard Kirsty Imai had 13. Senior Hotia Vaaimamao added seven points and nine rebounds.
The Vulcans played without senior power forward Hillary Hurley, who sat out with a knee injury suffered in Saturday’s win over visiting Cal Baptist.
The Red Storm led 25-21 at the intermission.
“We were not quite poised enough offensively to pull it out,” UHH coach David Kaneshiro said. “Dixie State did a good job and deserved to win. We just needed to be a little more consistent.”
