All-Academic cagers
Nominations are being sought for the 22nd Hawaii Tribune-Herald All-Academic Basketball Team.
Big Island Interscholastic Federation schools are asked to submit their first semester grade point averages for their varsity boys and girls basketball teams that participated during the 2011-12 season. For the student-athletes to be eligible for the team, the GPA lists (3.0 and higher) must be submitted by Feb. 17.
The 2011 All-Academic Basketball Team included 33 student-athletes — 16 boys and 16 girls with first-semester grade point averages ranging from 3.9 to 4.5. The mythical squad was comprised of two four-time honorees, three three-time selections, six two-time honorees and 22 first-time selections.
Each year, a private sponsoring committee honors the top 15 varsity basketball boys and girls by first-semester GPAs. In the previous 21 years, over 750 student-athletes from around the Big Island have been honored.
Each honoree this year will be presented a plaque, a book and a certificate, which will be turned over to the respective schools to be presented to the student athletes.
The 2012 All-Academic Team will be announced in late March or early April.
Schools may e-mail the GPA lists to borear@hawaiitribune-herald.com or fax to (808) 961-3680. For further information, call T-H sports editor Bill O’Rear at 930-7332.
