Arc helps clean Hilo community
The Arc of Hilo, a nonprofit organization, partnered with Matson Navigation Company’s Ka Ipu ‘Aina (container for the land) program on Jan. 21.
In this community outreach effort, Matson donated the use of container equipment for environmental cleanup projects arranged by nonprofit organizations, then made a $1,000 cash contribution to the agency successfully completing its planned cleanup initiative.
The Arc of Hilo encourages community partnerships that are mutually beneficial, said a spokesman.
In this case, the Arc partnered not only with Matson, but also with the Pi’o Pi’o Bears Pa’ani Pono Girls volleyball team, in an outdoor cleanup at the Arc’s Waianuenue campus. The funds will be used to purchase uniforms for the team.
This initiative is part of the Arc’s extended outreach program, whose ultimate goal is to encourage environmental stewardship and responsibility, as well as promote partnerships that involve private, business and state entities working together for a better community.
Senior facility gets certification
The nursing staff at Hale Pu’uhonua Senior Assisted Living recently achieved advanced essentiALZ certification from the Alzheimer’s Association.
This in-depth program provides comprehensive training and testing to ensure high-quality care is provided by those who work with Alzheimer’s patients.
“Treatment options for Alzheimer’s patients are still quite limited, but by completing this training we are now better equipped to alleviate the chronic confusion, anxiety and agitation those with Alzheimer’s experience, and this can significantly improve their quality of life,” said facility owner Robert Olin.
Group offers $1K scholarship
The Big Island Retired Military Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship to Hawaii Island JROTC and Civil Air Patrol members. Children of active, reserve and retired military personnel are also eligible for this grant, called the BIRMA Mark Allen Traxler Scholarship. Contact your high school counselor for details.
