The county Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday it has been awarded a second year of a federal grant to develop an Elder Abuse Unit within the office.

According to a written statement from Prosecutor Charlene Iboshi, the unit is tasked with “expediting the prosecution of elder abuse and financial exploitation cases and enhances awareness and prevention of elder abuse through inter-agency collaborations.”

The prosecutor said that the Big Island’s population of elderly ages 60 and older increased 43.5 percent between 2000 and 2010, and estimated that for every reported case of elder abuse, another five incidents go unreported.

To report possible elder abuse, call Adult Protective Services at 933-8820 or the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. If the situation is an emergency, call 911.
