A Kona grand jury has indicted a 29-year-old Hawi man for allegedly threatening four North Kohala firefighters and stabbing one of them numerous times with a ball-point pen late last year.
The eight-count indictment dated Jan. 23 charges Dylan R. Trumpy with second-degree assault and seven counts of first-degree terroristic threatening.
A bench warrant raised Trumpy’s bail from $4,000 to $20,000. Arraignment is set for Feb. 22 at 8:30 a.m. before Kona Circuit Judge Elizabeth Strance.
The bench warrant orders Trumpy to stay away from the firefighters and the North Kohala station.
In a written statement, police said North Kohala patrol officers responded to a 9:15 a.m. call for help at the Hawi fire station on Dec. 27. Upon their arrival, officers reportedly saw Trumpy struggling with a firefighter on the floor of the firehouse driveway.
Police say the 49-year-old firefighter, identified in the indictment as Ricky White, was bleeding profusely from the stab wounds to the head.
He also suffered abrasions to the face and body from the struggle.
White was treated for his injuries at Kohala Hospital and released.
Firefighters reportedly told police that Trumpy had driven to the fire station and had become disorderly and aggressive while demanding information and names of Fire Department personnel. He reportedly attacked White after being asked to leave the firehouse due to his behavior.
On Monday, White told the Tribune-Herald that he and fellow firefighters responded to a report of rubbish burning at Trumpy’s home on Dec. 25, two days prior to the firehouse incident, and that Trumpy had threatened him and other firefighters. He declined to comment further due to the pending court case.
According to the indictment, Trumpy allegedly threatened White and three other firefighters, Sundie Aribal, William Perez and Elijah McDanniel with an ax and a hammer during the Christmas Day confrontation.
