A 21-year-old man charged with manslaughter after a fatal bar fight and an associate face several felony charges for allegedly assaulting a witness to the brawl.
Waylen Keone Carenio of Waimea and 24-year-old Turner Kaimana Au of Hilo turned themselves in to Hilo police Monday night. They were charged Tuesday afternoon with kidnapping, intimidating a witness, retaliating against a witness and third-degree assault.
Bail was set at $71,000 for each suspect, and both remain in the Hilo cellblock pending their initial appearances today in Hilo District Court.
Kidnapping is a felony carrying a maximum 20-year prison term; the other offenses are felonies carrying possible five-year prison sentences.
The victim was a 20-year-old Hilo man who allegedly witnessed the Dec. 3 altercation outside Karma Hawaii sports bar in Hilo that resulted in the death of 44-year-old Roy Williams of Mountain View.
The man told police that Carenio drove up to him in the parking lot of Coqui’s Hideaway restaurant and sports bar in Hilo shortly before midnight on Feb. 1 and that he got into the car. Police say that once the victim was inside the vehicle, a second man, later identified as Au, restrained him, and both Carenio and Au assaulted him.
The victim managed to break free and flee from the car.
Police say they’ve since recovered the car, an older Saturn four-door sedan, in Orchidland Estates subdivision.
Carenio appeared Tuesday afternoon in Hilo Circuit Court and entered a not guilty plea to the manslaughter charge. Judge Glenn Hara set a trial date of April 2 at 8:30 a.m.
Manslaughter is a felony carrying a possible 20-year prison sentence.
Hara maintained Carenio’s bail at $50,000 for that case, bail Carenio has already posted. He also ordered Carenio to stay away from witnesses to the fatal affray.
