For the past eight years, the University of Hawaii at Hilo Women’s Center, in collaboration with our East Hawaii community, has come together to sponsor a benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.” This year’s event will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the UH-Hilo Performing Arts Center.
Since its beginnings in 1998, V-Day, as it is commonly known, has become a global movement that raises funds and awareness through productions of the play to end violence against women and girls. This production helps support women both locally and globally. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to a local nonprofit organization on the Big Island that helps support the fight to end violence against women.
In 2011, more than 6,000 V-Day events took place around the world. To date, the V-Day movement has raised more than $80 million.
Tickets for this performance are $12 for general admission, $5 for students, and $7 faculty, and are available at the Women’s Center office located in Campus Center, room 312 and downtown at Basically Books and Hairy Monkey Books.
