HONOLULU — An airport kiss between husband and wife capped a dramatic rescue of a Canadian man, his 9-year-old son and his brother adrift in the Pacific Ocean.
Megan James arrived at Honolulu International Airport late Thursday from Canada to be reunited with the trio, hours after they arrived at a Honolulu port onboard a massive containership that came to their aid when pounding surf and furious winds disabled their sailboat during a voyage from Mexico to Hawaii.
When the ship arrived, the 39-foot sailboat bounced off it, creating two giant waves that sank the boat, throwing all three into the cold water.
The brother was saved quickly, but father and son were adrift for two hours before the Horizon Reliance crew pulled them aboard.
During the plane ride over the Pacific, James looked out the window and tried to imagine the ordeal that nearly killed her relatives, she said soon after she was reunited with them.
“I don’t really comprehend what they went through and how crazy it must have been,” she said. “I looked out at the water, and I couldn’t imagine them floating out there.”
Her husband, Bradley James, recalled calling her when they first encountered trouble at sea: “I did what no husband should ever do to his wife. I said, ‘Honey, we’re 300 miles from Hilo and I think we may have a problem. Can you get me the number for the Coast Guard in Hilo?”‘
Megan said she doesn’t mind that her husband and brother-in-law Mitchell are planning another high-seas adventure.
“I don’t think that you should stop doing something just because something bad happens,” she said.
