Happy Valentine’s Day to you all. Make sure to spend this day with all those you love and cherish.
The 7th Annual Laupahoehoe Music Festival this Saturday is loaded with events for everyone! Come to Laupahoehoe Point Beach Park and bring the family for a day of fun and activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be food and craft booths. Malama Hawaii Nei presents Mark Yamanaka, Times 5, Lorna Lim & Polinahe with Sony Lim, Darlene Ahuna, Kunoa, Kanakapila, Laupahoehoe School Ukulele Band, Honokaa High School Jazz Band, Halau O Mailelaulani, Halau O Ke Anuenue and Makana. This is a drug- and alcohol-free event. The Hawaii Saddle Club is proud to be offering scholarships to graduating high school seniors going on to an accredited college or university. These will also be offered to students currently enrolled. Please read through the criteria and eligibility of the scholarships, complete application and requirements, and submit before April 13. The scholarship amounts are $1,000 and $500.
The Saddle Club understands the importance of our youth in our community and are pleased to contribute to their higher education. If you have any questions, please contact Patricia Andrade-Stout at 937-3265.
The eligibility includes that an applicant must be a graduating high school senior or currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. The applicant must be a resident of the County of Hawaii or a student at Honokaa High School. Applicant must include a one-page essay on “Agriculture and the Future of Hawaii.” Completed application and requirements, copy of current transcript, and a letter of recommendation must be submitted by April 13.
The criteria for the applicant is divided into these areas: 40 percent academic (2.0 GPA minimum); 40 percent financial need; 1 percent community service; and 10 percent extracurricular activities/agricultural activities/community service.
Scholarship award selections will be made by the Hawaii Saddle Club Scholarship Committee. The scholarship committee will determine the residency factor if necessary. In case of a tie, preference may be given to Hawaii Saddle Club members or dependents. Awards will be given when proof of college or university enrollment is submitted to the committee. Applications will be made available through high school counselors or Hawaii Saddle Club Members.

“Valentine’s Day is traditionally a very tough day for those who have lost their spouses and partners,” said Benson Medina, co-founder of Rising Through Grief and a widower himself.
The facilitator-directed support group will help participants learn coping strategies and develop new perspectives that may help in resolving grief and creating a more positive outlook for the future. Valentine’s Day, with its focus on love and couples, often creates a huge emotional setback for those grieving the loss of loved ones.
Medina, a former business executive and his sister, Lani Medina Weigert, co-owner of Maui’s Alii Kula Lavender Farm, both lost their “significant others” which prompted them to open Rising Through Grief to help others cope with catastrophic loss and grief of any kind.
