Lawsuit filed in glider accident
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — The widow of a Southern California man who died when his motorized hang glider crashed off Kauai is suing the flight company and aircraft manufacturer.
Cynthia Foreman says defective equipment prevented her husband, 53-year-old Ray Foreman of Vista, Calif., and pilot Steve Sprague from freeing themselves when the glider went into the ocean off Honopu Beach on May 17.
Foreman and Sprague died. Cynthia Foreman and her husband were vacationing on Kauai at the time. The National Transportation Safety Board has said witnesses heard a pop as the aircraft turned toward the ocean.
Cynthia Foreman filed the lawsuit on Friday in federal court in Honolulu.
A call to a listing for the flight company, Kauai Aerosports, on Saturday was not immediately returned. No one picked up the phone at the U.K.-based aircraft maker, P&M Aviation.
House honors late lawmaker
HONOLULU (AP) — As a diplomat, former Rep. Samuel Lee traveled the world, but he always returned to Hawaii to give back to his community.
His many contributions to the state will be remembered, says House Speaker Calvin Say, who served with Lee in the House from 1986 to 1996.
Lee died Friday at the age of 81.
After 26 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, Lee settled with his family in Mililani. When pesticide contamination was found in Mililani’s drinking water, Lee became a community activist. He led a successful grassroots campaign that compelled developers and government officials to remedy the situation, Say said in a release.
Lee went on to serve five terms in the House.
He is survived by his wife, Rep. Marilyn Lee, four children and six grandchildren.
