Young Alani named

monthly winner

Captain Cook’s Jason Alani, a national winner in the NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick contest’s boys 8-9 division has been named the Big Island Athlete of the Month for January.

Alani, a Chargers fan, was among the winners honored Jan. 15 during an awards presentation at the AFC divisional playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans.

Forty young athletes from around the country competed in the national finals Jan. 14 in Baltimore during the weekend of the AFC Divisional Playoff Game.

Finalists competed in five age divisions at the Ravens’ team facility, with the top scorer in each group crowned national champion. All participants launched two punts, two passes and two kicks, with scores based on distance and accuracy (in feet). The best score from each activity is tabulated to determine the athlete’s total, a spokesman said.

The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.

Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.
