There have been 154 major accidents so far this year compared to 169 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9 percent. So far this year, there have been two official traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared to five during the same period last year, a decrease of 60 percent.

During the week of Feb. 6-12, 2012, Big Island police arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Five were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 14; Kona, 10; Puna, 3; South Kohala, 2; and Ka’u, 1.

So far this year, there have been 161 DUI arrests compared to 162 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.6 percent.

There were multiple arrests stemming from the 30 DUI arrests — two for driving while license suspended, eight for driving without a license, two for marijuana possession, two for promoting dangerous drugs, nine for driving without insurance and nine others for various traffic and criminal violations.
